Maggots & Larvae: A new way to meet the need for protein rich feed
- To meet the need for protein, feed suppliers ought to think differently. Maggots are one way to go. They have a remarkable ability to transform nearly any kind of organic waste into high-quality protein, with zero waste, zero human rights issues and zero deforestation.
- Because of the increasing demand for affordable and healthy protein and the low entry barriers, the number of maggot farms is growing. Proteios will corporate closely with these, and through our microfinancing program support others to set up their maggot farms.
- By this, Proteios are guaranteed access to high-quality protein, while the farmers get a steady income and the opportunity to further expand their business.

We use echosounder technology to track and produce data about volume and location of mesopelagic fishes in a specific area.
Farming process (BioFeed)
• Numbers show that 10% of the global greenhouse gas emissions come from food waste. Instead of going to landfills, a large part of this waste could be safely used for animal feed.
• A circular system like this will reduce major environmental impacts of producing feed crops like land, energy, and water use, while bolstering food security.
• For Proteios, organic waste is interesting due to its suitability as a feed source for maggot farming. This way the waste ends up as healthy, sustainable and low-cost food for farm animals.
• Food waste can also be converted into feed through a treatment process that includes sorting, screening, grinding, dewatering, heating and drying.
• Proteios will be the link between on the one hand the food waste collecting companies and on the other hand maggot farmers and manufacturers using organic waste as a feed ingredient.

The process (BioFeed)
After harvesting the BSF maggots, they need to be cleaned. This is to make sure there are no frass or remains of the feed when entering the production machinery.
Water from the cleaning process is separated in a centrifuge separator before the mass enters the microwave tunnel for draining.
To extract the insect oil, the processed dried maggots are pressed by a hydraulic press machine before it’s grinded into crumbles, transformed to extract powder, and finally end up as dried and sterilized pellets.
